993 Sneaky weakspot....

The Porsche 911 type 993; last of the air-cooled, pinnacle of Porsche engineering, king of Porsche etc etc.  Many are, despite high mileages, running like they just came from the showroom floor. But with the earliest examples nearing the 20 year mark even this bulletproof machine is showing some weak spots. Read on>>

What lies beneath...

Not a major problem but still something to be aware of if you own a 993 or are in the market to buy. The cause? A rare engineering fault by the Porsche factory. Before the body was painted in the final color the factory would bolt on the two bumper support brackets on the rear chassis beams. Unfortunateley,  no rust prevention was applied and although this spot is well hidden from the elements, in the long run moisture will work itself between these brackets and the chassis beams. As this spot is not revealed unless the bumper is removed or replaced most 993's have a rust spot that will slowly eat its way through the chassis beams.

Number 9 is the culprit...

Unless your car had a hard life on the street in a very rainy environment chances are these rust spots are minor and superficial. But once rust is present it will eventually become a serious problem that needs some welding and body shop attention. If you have the tools and time it is a fairly easy DIY job and set combined with major engine work or for instance a bumper respray. Expect at least a 4 hour job for a specialist, more if welding is needed.

Worst case...

Most 993's will look like this.
